A New Network for the Advancement of Marine Biotechnology in Europe and Beyond
2020
Marine organisms produce a vast diversity of metabolites with biological activities useful for humans, e.g., cytotoxic, antioxidant, anti-microbial, insecticidal, herbicidal, anticancer, pro-osteogenic and pro-regenerative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, cholesterol-lowering, nutritional, photoprotective, horticultural or other beneficial properties. These metabolites could help satisfy the increasing demand for alternative sources of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, food, feed, and novel bio-based products. in addition, marine biomass itself can serve as the source material for the production of various bulk commodities (e.g., biofuels, bioplastics, biomateria…

Incivility in online news and Twitter: effects on attitudes toward scientific topics when reading in a second language
2021
Due to the participatory nature of Web 2.0, polite communication on social media and news sites can stand side by side with uncivil comments. Research on online incivility has been conducted with users reading in their mother tongues (L1), while the potential effects of incivility in a second language (L2) have been largely under- explored. This paper analyzes the effects of uncivil comments written in an L2 on attitudes around emerging technologies. Accordingly, study 1 replicates and extends a previous experiment on the effects of incivility to online news on risk perceptions of nanotechnology (Anderson et al., 2014), by adding an ‘L2 condition’ (uncivil comments written in an L2). Then, …
Expert video exchanges in bilingual biology lessons - student’s intrinsic motivation and subject-specific interest
2019
This paper presents an instructional model to incorporate English-language communication between international practicing scientists and English learners into secondary science lessons. The aim was...
Scientific communication in museums through presential mediation : Case study le Pavillon des Sciences
2014
In science museums and science centers, "presential" mediation positioning a mediator and the public in the co-presence of objects within a dedicated environment, remains relatively unknown. From a Communication Science perspective, analyzing actual situations transcends the simple provision of information, and focuses on the significance of third party forms within the construction of meaning. Presential communication is transient and centered on the words and gestures of an embodied third party. It provides a greater potential for interactions around practical situations, unlike other media (i.e. an exhibition). The purpose of this research is to question the rightful place of these speci…
Do Videogames Simulate? Virtuality and Imitation in the Philosophy of Simulation
2015
Simulation. The concept of simulation has been contested in academia since its proliferation in the 1960s. This is hardly the case in videogame research, the subject of which is commonly discussed as a simulation or something that simulates with little analytical consideration of the term’s other scientific roles. Comparison. The article compares the simulation of videogame research to the ways in which other scientific sectors utilize the term. Problematic science communication. It turns out that videogame research has found an eccentric use for simulation with none or little relation to the term’s scientific (knowledge-driven) and etymological (imitational) predecessors. This becomes a p…
The Power of Science Communication
2014
The study will investigate the concepts of science communication and its benefits. Being good communicators in general will help scientists to be better science communicators in order to: • help the public understand science as part of their real lives, • see not only the importance of the science and its source of pleasure and wonder, but also to be able to make decisions about it as citizens, policymakers, funders, etc. • help in educating citizenry, concerned about the threats facing our planet to better shape the direction of political and policy decisions, because how scientists communicate this information may have measurable conservation impacts on the future of our planet. More than…

Whether and to what extent mass media contribute to the acquisition of knowledge depends fundamentally on the senses addressed by a particular medium. However, there is a lack of current research investigating the effectiveness and efficiency of (new) media, like scrollytelling and explainer videos, at conveying information, compared to established formats like text and audio. To fill this research gap, I conducted an experimental online survey (N = 381) with medium as the independent variable (explainer text vs. audio vs. video vs. scrollytelling) and the recall of information as the dependent variable. The subjects were presented with a popular scientific presentation on the environmental…
Innocampus Explora: Una aproximación multidisciplinar a la problemática ambiental
2020
